about

With her new single, PETRICHOR, Ezza Rose’s musical identity continues to evolve. Rose’s new song digs under the fingernails of a society pressured by a global pandemic. Combining driving rhythm, aggressive electric guitar, and dreamy vocal melodies with lyrical grit. The result is a work that covers the complex landscape of interactions and accountability between people, ranging from the public eye to behind closed doors.

It was a stroke of luck that brought this new single to the world. During quarantine, when live performances and social gatherings disappeared, Rose started doing monthly livestreams on Instagram to try to connect with fans and fellow artists, while also supplementing her lost income. After one of these performances Rose was messaged by Chris Funk (of the Decemberists). He asked her band to come record and mix a song at the infamous Bodecker Building so the process could be used in a class on record engineering for Portland public school teachers. Working with Chris Funk and engineer Adam Lee, Rose and the band created ‘PETRICHOR’! The money the band was paid to work with the class was almost to the dollar the amount it took to finish the song and ready it for release.

lyrics

I hung on every word like I wanted to believe
like an apple too ripe to still hang from the tree
like the sundress in spring I keep next to the door
like the people who march and still wonder what for
like a life that’s been given and forced to live
like the gun in your house they still think is a myth
like your parents trying saying it's the best that they can
like smoking a cigarette while flipping off the man
like being angry about trying not to complain
like loving the forest but being pissed off at the rain
like the flesh in my mouth of an animal I can’t kill
like the sound of the lonely who keep swallowing pills

It’s time to turn on the lights

Ezza Rose Portland, Oregon

“The progression from folk to something more closely resembling rock has been organic and fluid like the rest of her history, but she is not without a significant amount of stubborn drive. This latest change is just another indicator that Rose is, above all, a consummate musician.” - Anchorage Press ... more
